Traffic Giant Crack And Patch: The Best Way to Enjoy the Classic Strategy Game



The time of year when the crack filling is done will affect the performance of the sealant. Most cracks will open and close, depending on the season of the year. Crack sealing should be carried out when the cracks are in the middle of their opening range, which usually equates to spring or fall. Cracks filled in summer, when they are at minimum width, will be under-filled in the winter. Cracks filled in the winter, when they are at maximum width, will be over-filled in the summer and traffic may pull the crack filling material out of the crack.


Proper compaction is a critical factor in producing a permanent patch. A vibratory-plate compactor is excellent for small patches and mandatory for compacting corners. A medium-sized roller may be more practical for large patch areas. A properly compacted patch should be overfilled in anticipation of traffic compaction. A straightedge or string-line should be used to check the evenness of the surface. A patcher truck is useful if numerous patches are involved. The truck can contain a bin for hot mix asphalt or store liquid asphalt and aggregate to mix and dispense into the patch. Vibrating compactors can be part of or attached to the patching truck.

According to the US Army Corps of Engineers's Cold Regions Research and Engineering Laboratory, pothole formation requires two factors to be present at the same time: water and traffic. Water weakens the soil beneath the pavement while traffic applies the loads that stress the pavement past the breaking point. Potholes form progressively from fatigue of the road surface which can lead to a precursor failure pattern known as crocodile (or alligator) cracking.[2] Eventually, chunks of pavement between the fatigue cracks gradually work loose, and may then be plucked or forced out of the surface by continued wheel loads to create a pothole.[3]


An asphalt pavement can only last for so long, before signs of ageing and deterioration start showing on its surface. Just like our skin, constant exposure to the sun, weather, natural elements, and stress can cause damage, brittleness and flaking. Soon enough, you will begin to notice cracks snaking their way along the length of your driveway or parking lot, as well as patches of moss or algae, discolorations and fading, depressions, ruts and uneven sections.


When cracks and potholes are not filled right away, the damage tends to grow more extensive, especially in areas where there is high traffic, such as in parking lots. Constant stress from heavy vehicles and regular traffic can create depressions on the pavement surface or continuously chip off chunks of aggregate until the potholes grow too large for crackfill.


When the holes on your pavement are too large and extensive for crack filler, we recommend cutting out the damaged section using a gas-powered pavement saw. Clear the section of loose debris and pour enough pothole repair patch until the material flush is with the rims of the cut-out. Tamp down with a handheld metal tamper until completely compacted, adding and tamping as you go, until the surface of the patched hole is even with the rest of the pavement. Do the same for sunken and distressed areas.


In short, hairline stucco cracks are common and can be easily repatched. Most are not a serious indicator of foundation damage or structural disrepair. However, hairline cracks caused by foundation settlement will likely reappear after the repair and worsen.


Once your home is properly supported, push pier and helical pier systems allow for practical maximum recovery (the possibility of regaining inches lost by settlement). After your home has been brought up to maximum practical recovery and/or stabilized, then the stucco cracks can be patched once and for all.


Edge cracks are cracks that appear along the outside edges of the pavement. They are typically long and run in the direction of the road. These cracks are caused by the soil under the road drying and shrinking, poor drainage, heavy vegetation along the outside edge road and excessive traffic.


Because this type of cracking indicates a fundamental flaw with every layer of the asphalt from the surface to the stabilizing sub-layers, we recommend full-depth patches, strengthening and restoring the integrity of the surface and preventing future cracking in the area.


Pavement rutting is characterized by indentations along the wheel paths of cars. It is caused by compression of the surface layers, insufficient compaction during install and/or moisture infiltration. It is aggravated by heavy traffic. Rutting is typically repaired by applying cold mill and an overlay or a thin surface patch to fill in and level the roadway.


Potholes are a common occurrence in Midwest. They occur when previous pavement damage, including cracks, patch failures, swelling, or rutting, has been left to worsen. Cracks and other pavement damage allow water and other fluids to enter the pavement and expand, contract and freeze, depending on the weather.


Asphalt binders bleed through the surface of the pavement when too much asphalt is used in the construction mix, excessive sealant is used in cracks and joints and when seal coating is improperly mixed. Heavy traffic aggravates asphalt bleeding and can create ruts and bleeding along tire tracks.


Patching a driveway is a temporary fix. Even if you fill a small crack, water will eventually seep in between the new patch filler and the old asphalt, eroding the asphalt and widening the crack. Patching can help avoid replacing a driveway for two to three years.

After removing the tube from the tire, inflate it to allow for easier examination. Certainly a puncture wound will make itself known right away. But the tube could have failed from a stress crack caused by a wrinkle that may have happened when the tube was first placed in the tire.
